The HMIS top drive system is the most compact offering in theTesco top drive line.
Designed to fit into small masts, the HMIS provides the performance and pipe handling features required for shallow drilling and workover applications.
Tesco powers the HMIS using industry proven prime movers and its own series of hydraulic pump drives and filtration equipment
The HMIS top drive is rated for 250 ton casing loads.
Quill performance (torque and speed) can be customized using optional gear ratios.
OPERATIONAL ADVANTAGES :
The complete system including the top drive, torque system and power unit can be installed in less than one day. In most cases, no rig modifications are necessary.
The HMIS is equipped with an independent diesel or traction motor power supply.
The HMIS offers all critical pipe-handling functions including elevator link-tilt, and an extend/retract feature (54") for making at eye level mousehole connections. The HMIS grabber acts as a back-up tong for making or breaking connections. The grabber will accommodate tool joints from 2 3 /8" to 6 5 /8"OD.
Two speed/torque ranges are selectable from the drillers console.
The HMIS track/torque bushing configuration is simple to install and requires very little maintenance.
- A mud saver/safety valve is incorporated into the system design.
- The entire HMIS can be transported in three standard 20' sea containers.

INTEGRATED DRILLING SWIVEL / MAIN DRIVE QUILL
Drilling swivel designed to API 8C specification, complete with extended length drive quill, which is externally splined to accept the top drive gearbox.This unique design allows removal of the drive quill from the gearbox, for inspection purposes, on the rig floor, without entry into or oil drainage out of the gearbox.
Bottom connection: 4” FH Right Hand Pin.

The drilling swivel includes a counter balance system that employs accumulator-assisted rams to cushion the weight of the top drive and to protect the drill pipe threads as they are connected or disconnected from the drill string.Included are standard 32" swivel links and a yoke assembly.
TOP DRIVE GEARBOX
Designed to accept one hydraulic motor complete with selected gear reduction. The 250HMI top drive is configured with a standard gear ratio of 2.19:1.An optional 1.64:1 gear ratio is available upon request. The gear ratios are field interchangeable.
The top drive gearbox utilizes a performance enhanced bi-rotational rotary vane hydraulic motor, which is able to generate high torque at low or high speeds. The hydraulic pressure rating is 3,500 psi continuous and 4,000 psi intermittent net hydraulic pressure.
HIGH / LOW RANGE HYDRAULIC MOTOR MANIFOLD
The hydraulic manifold allows the driller two specific ranges, with corresponding torque and speed values.The required range can be selected remotely from the driller's panel. The motor manifold has two field adjustable pressure relief valves to limit connection and maximum drilling torque.

DOUBLE BALL VALVE MUD SAVER / SAFETY VALVE
Connections: Externally splined 4” FH Right Hand Box, by 4” FH Right Hand Box.

One piece design double ball - double crank - valve rated for 10,000 psi working pressure.The upper ball valve (mud saver) can be operated manually or remotely from the driller’s control panel. The lower ball valve (safety valve) is manually operated.
HYDRAULIC REMOTE ACTUATOR
The hydraulic actuator may be stripped from the mud saver valve in a well control situation, with inside drill pipe pressure secured by the lower ball valve.Custom tools to quickly remove the actuator are included. Then the mud saver / safety valve may then be stripped in to the well.
Extend Frame:Allows mouse hole connection at driller’s eye level and easy racking of bottom hole assemblies.
Elevator Link Tilt cylinders: Capable of 35º forward and 55º back, with safety chains, and 4 ½” ID link clamps with 3 ½” ID inserts.
Grabber(Back-up wrench): Designed to accommodate tool joints from 2 3/8” (spacer kit required) to 6 5/8” OD. The Grabber utilizes standard tong dies, and acts as a back-up tong for making or breaking connections at any point in the mast. Additional grabber features include:
1.Manual grabber height adjustment, in order to handle a variety of tool joint lengths and to facilitate the easy change out of saver subs and dies.
Automatic thread feed compensation for make up and break out.

The split grabber drill pipe guide has an ID of 5”.
CONNECTION LOCKING CLAMPS
All top drive load path connections are easily accessible and locked with connection locking clamps as a safety feature.
From top to bottom:
1.A 5 3/8" connection locking clamp is provided for the 4” FH connection between the integral drive quill and safety valve.
2.For the 4” FH connection between the safety valve and saver sub, a 5 3/8“ connection locking clamp is utilized.
Note:The connection-locking clamp between the safety valve and the quill facilitates quick disassembly.This is particularly advantageous in a well control situation, when the safety valve has to be stripped into the well.
TOP DRIVE HANDLING FRAME
This rugged top drive shipping / transport frame facilitates wellsite handling of the top drive with picker, fork lift or winch line.This transport frame is also used to rig up and rig down the top drive.

POWER UNIT SKID complete with SKID ROLL
Two skids make up the complete power unit.The main skid holds the prime mover, pumps/filters, tank/cooler and weighs about 13,500 lbs.The hose reel comes complete on a separate skid that can be bolted to the main skid or spotted separately and weighs approximately 3,500 lbs.
The four pad (two pads blanked), heavy duty, pump drive has a step-up Gear Ratio of 1.18:1, and includes oil circulating pump, cooler, and high temperature shutdown.
HYDRAULIC PUMPS (173 GPM Maximum)
The hydraulic pumps are of variable displacement; axial piston design for closed loop applications and are remotely controlled from the driller’s control panel.
Designed 300 gpm large flow rectifier system for non-bypass high pressure filtering in both directions, complete with 8 high - pressure 10 micron filters. Includes an adjustable reverse torque limit valve, and a flow control to shuttle hot oil to the cooling system.
Complete set of visually indicating, 5,000 psi rated, bi-directional flow meters, and temperature gauges, for each pump in order to monitor performance on individual pumps.Additional flow meters and temperature gauges are incorporated to monitor system performance.
150 US Gallon (568 litres) hydraulic oil reservoir complete with suction screens, level gauge, air breather, filler pump and filter, temperature gauges and return filters. Automatic shut off incorporated for low oil and high temperature.
AIR / HYDRAULIC OIL COOLER
Heavy duty, thermostatically controlled air cooler, complete with 5 HP explosion - proof electric motor and fan.
AUXILIARY HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
Seven GPM gear pump to operate all robotic functions on the Top Drive. Uses the same oil reservoir as the closed loop system. Complete With 10 hp explosion - proof electric motor, hydraulic pump, filters and controls. Operates at 2,000 psi.
SERVICE LOOPITEM 1.3
Capable of storing the complete service loop (excluding 37C control cable). The reel has a hydraulic drive for easy spooling of the hoses.Complete with lifting lugs for ease of handling.
MAIN HYDRAULIC HOSE
The portable units incorporate 2 - 150’ X 1 ½” X 5,000 psi working pressure certified, hydraulic hoses to transfer fluid power to the top drive. These hoses are light weight and have a small minimum bend radius which allows them to be easily spooled. The hydraulic hoses are flexible, durable, and come complete with loop containment chains (chains, which encircle the loop hoses to prevent splaying, as the loop travels in the mast).
